Report on Speed Indicator Devices for APC Meeting October 2026

Speed Report for APC Meeting October 2026

Brook Road Speed Indicator Device (SID) Sign
During September this was facing traffic coming FROM Marks Tey and was recording speeds but
NOT displaying the speeds to the traffic.
Generally, the average speeding on this road is 15% of traffic over 30mph and 1% over 35mph.
During last month whilst the SID was ‘off to drivers’ this rose to 20% over 30mph and 2% over
35mph. This proves the SID is having and effect when in place and displaying vehicle speeds. When
we had the SID facing the other direction (the last 2 months), there was no real difference in either
on or off. This shows we need to keep it in place and working facing the traffic from Marks Tey for
maximum effect.
85th Percentile Speed remains at 30-35mph.
With reference to Mill Race Moto related vehicles, the data for September was split in half 1st to
15th and 16th to 30th to show data before Moto opened and after. There were increases in vehicles
on Wed, Sat and Sundays. BUT, we see many differences on various days during the month which is
usually down to what’s happening outside the village on the A12, A120 and A1124. So difficult to
attribute to anything in particular. Generally, it appears from the data and local reports that traffic
is behaving in the 30mph areas but then ‘lets loose’ as soon (or just before) the national speed
limit areas. So, we need to work on these areas of the village when looking at any speed reduction
ideas.
Ford Street Speed Indicator Device (SID) Sign
Generally, the average speeding on this road is 40% of traffic over 30mph and 15% over 35mph,
dropping to 3% over 40mph. In September 1st half and second half were similar at 38% over
30mph and 12% over 35mph, 3% for over 40mph. So lower than average. There was more traffic
on Wednesdays during the month but no more on average than when viewed against recent
months. Mind you this is only recording data from traffic travelling from Colchester and does not
include any from Halstead direction.
85th Percentile Speed remains at 30-35mph.
In summary
The SID’s show differences in traffic levels but no more or less than other month variances. We
know Mill Race Moto has had a successful 1st month and more traffic is definitely going to the
venue but it is no more than if we had a road issue on the surrounding ‘A’ roads. Obviously, when
we have another ‘A’ road issue then there will be more traffic, just difficult to analyse with current
measuring equipment. As seen from the public meeting, the issue isn’t just the number of vehicles
but the speed and noise of them. The results show comparison between July and September 2026
as these are most recent with SID’s facing same way.
